Experience

Previously, I worked as an online psychology professor at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Online Division. In addition to teaching Introductory Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Theories of Personality, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Strategies for Online Learning. My experience includes mentoring 6-12 adjunct instructors each session. I have also participated in special projects, such as course revisions, developing video content for the online courses, and presenting online faculty development workshops. For three years I worked as a psychology professor and faculty advisor at Union Institute and University. As a professor, I taught a wide variety of courses, including introductory psychology, behavioral statistics, research methods, abnormal psychology, ethics in psychology, developmental psychology, and personality theory. Most of these courses were taught in a tutorial format, which required me to provide individualized instruction to my students, adapting my teaching methods to their educational background, interests, and abilities. As a faculty advisor, I mentored 15-20 students at a time through their entire program at Union Institute and University. I helped my students develop individualized degree plans, registered them for courses each semester, provided career and academic counseling, and often acted as an ombudsman when they ran into difficulties with the university system. I have also taught General Principles of Psychology and Lifespan Developmental Psychology at American River College (both web-enhanced lecture courses), and have previously taught lecture courses in introductory psychology at Sierra College. At CSU Sacramento, I worked for a year as a student assistant in the campus library, assisting in the coordination of the library expansion project. I completed coursework in the teaching of psychology, which culminated in the opportunity to teach an introductory psychology course as a part-time faculty instructor. As a graduate teaching assistant, I provided one-on-one tutoring of research methods and statistical procedures. In this position, I was also responsible for preparing examination keys, and supervising three undergraduate teaching assistants each semester. My experience also includes teaching discussion sections of an introductory biology course at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, where I assisted students in the audio-tutorial biology lab. During my two-year research assistantship at the University of Nebraska, I participated in a NIMH-funded study of the effectiveness of cognitive therapy in schizophrenia at the Lincoln Regional Center. As part of the research team I performed behavioral ratings for videotaped group therapy sessions and developed a Quality of Life Questionnaire. At both the Lincoln Regional Center and at the University of Michigan Medical Center, I conducted neuropsychological and social skills assessments on inpatients and outpatients, and helped generate databases that were used in a variety of research studies on epilepsy, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer’s disease. At the University of Washington, I was responsible for quality control checking of neuropsychological test data as part of a study on traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. My background includes experience with a wide variety of software applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Powerpoint, Front Page), SPSS for Windows, Adobe Creative Suite, and Final Draft. I have experience conducting training classes on Gotomeeting, and also have experience teaching courses utilizing both eCollege and Blackboard.
